Celebrating Education 2016-2017
On January 19 we celebrated the achievements of Schenectady’s students and teachers and the Schenectady City School District Educational Foundation. Over two hundred people enjoyed the festivities from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Proctors.
The annual gala is held to celebrate education and the achievements of the students and staff of the Schenectady School District. The evening was devoted to reflecting on some of the school district’s achievements and most generous benefactors. Entertainment was provided by Schenectady High School jazz ensemble led by Dave Gleason and the attendees enjoyed hors d’oeuvres prepared by Schenectady’s culinary students under the guidance of Laura Macey. They also had the opportunity to participate in a raffle.
The Foundation paid tribute to members of the school community with our Crystal Apple Awards, which are given to a community organization that contributes to the education of our students and to a Distinguished Alumnus. The Dr. Ray & June Benenson Community Service Award recipient was Reading Is Fun and The Ernie Kahn Outstanding Alumnus recipient was Shirley Readdean. Meghan Libertucci was the Robert Ludwig Teacher of the Year. Ray Coluicciello and Edna Lake were honored for their roles in the creation of the SCSDEF. Recipients of the 2016-17 grants were also recognized. These winners serve as a valuable reminder of the importance of education and service to community.
The mission of the Schenectady City School District Educational Foundation is to provide supplemental funding for the enhancement of learning opportunities for the students in the Schenectady Public Schools. Since 2006 the foundation has awarded 240 grants worth about $186,000. The evening was a tribute to the students and to the adults who have contributed to that mission.
